What it is

According to Glenmorangie, whisky aged for 14 years in bourbon casks was selected and then finished for two more years in sweet white wine casks: Sauternes and Monbazillac casks from France, Moscatel casks from Spain and Tokaji casks from Hungary. The distillery says the Sauternes and Monbazillac casks bring pastry and brioche notes, the Moscatel casks syrupy dessert-like sweetness, and the Tokaji casks white chocolate, almond and honeycomb.

Nose

Vanilla, stone fruit, apple pie, a silky texture

Palate

Baked fruit, spice, tropical fruit, butter cookies, citrus, honey, vanilla

Finish

Nutty butter cookies and fruit that linger for a moderate length

Impressions

A 16-year-old single malt for a little over 100,000 won feels like good value. The nose opens with soft dessert notes, and on the palate there is a layered sweetness, perhaps from the several dessert wine casks used. Right after opening, though, the spice stood out a little, which was a slight disappointment. I liked the sweet, nutty butter-cookie character. It is an easy whisky to enjoy every day.
