One sentence definition
Single malt Scotch whisky is Scotch whisky made at a single distillery from only water and malted barley and batch distilled in a copper pot still. Here, single refers to one distillery, not one cask. Even if you mix juices from multiple casks and multiple ages, it can still be a single malt if they all come from the same distillery.
Common conditions for Scotch whisky
- Saccharified, fermented and distilled in Scotland and aged in Scotland.
- Aged for at least 3 years in oak casks of less than 700 liters.
- Distilled to less than 94.8% ABV to maintain the aroma and taste derived from the raw materials and manufacturing process.
- Bottled at a minimum of 40% ABV.
- Nothing other than water and permitted regular caramel coloring may be added.

The Maker Game is a simplified simulation of single malt making choices. It is not a manufacturing model that calculates the actual distillery's fermentation time, still type, cut point, and warehouse environment.
Single does not mean one cask
Single identifies one distillery. A regular single malt may combine many casks and ages from that distillery. Single Cask is an additional production description, not the definition of single malt. Combining several casks from one distillery also does not create blended malt; that category involves malts from more than one distillery.
Separate production place from bottling
Single Malt Scotch must be distilled at one distillery and matured in Scotland under the regulations. Bottling, ownership and brand relationships require their own reading. An independent bottler can release qualifying whisky from one distillery without turning it into a different legal category.
A useful label order
First find the legal sales description, then the distillery or disclosed source, age or vintage, cask and finish, single-cask or batch information, ABV, volume, bottler and origin. Natural-colour and non-chill-filtered claims describe production choices rather than a quality tier.
Category and flavour answer different questions
Single malt is a rule about grain, distillery and distillation method. It does not promise peat, sherry, weight or complexity. Compare legal category first, then region, cask, age and strength. Whiskies in the same category may taste very different, and different categories may share aromas.
What the game leaves out
Maker begins with a simplified malt choice and focuses on maturation and presentation. Real new make is already shaped by barley, milling, mashing, yeast, fermentation, still geometry, heating and cuts. The game is a learning model for relationships, not technical instructions for operating a distillery.
