The number is the age of the youngest whisky
The age stated on a Scotch whisky label is the maturation period of the youngest whisky in the bottle. Even if 12-year-old whisky is combined with 18-year-old whisky, the stated age is 12 years. Time spent in the glass bottle after bottling does not add to the age.
Changes that occur when aged for a long time
More time in contact with oak can increase cask impressions such as vanilla, spice, nuts and tannins. At the same time, the fruit/grain character of the distilled liquor may be weakened, or excessive woody taste and dryness may occur. Maturation speed varies depending on cask size and history, warehouse location, temperature and humidity.

How is it different in the game?
The Maker Game assigns cost and quality expectations to aging choices ranging from 3 to 30 years. However, cask/malt/batch differences and top score compression are maintained to ensure that high maturity does not automatically result in the highest score. This is a model that reduces the complexity of reality into playable rules.
What an age statement does not tell you
Age does not identify every cask, warehouse condition, batch component or bottling strength. A first-fill-led 12-year-old can look and taste different from a refill-led whisky of the same age. Vintage also needs a bottling date before maturation time can be understood, while words such as old, rare or reserve are not substitutes for a numerical age statement.
Why different ages are combined
Producers can combine younger, brighter fruit with older oak and spice to create a target style. The stated age follows the youngest component, so not every drop is necessarily that exact age. A single cask presents one cask's variation; a multi-cask batch can pursue consistency. Neither is automatically superior.
How to read NAS
NAS means no numerical age statement is shown, not that Scotch's minimum maturation disappears. Check cask programme, strength, filtration and colour claims, batch purpose and any composition information the producer provides. The missing number should not be replaced with an unsupported guess.
Cost and scarcity in older whisky
Longer ageing uses warehouse time and loses volume through the angel's share, but packaging, distribution, brand and demand also affect price. Taste without seeing the number first when possible, then compare fruit vitality, oak, tannin, texture and balance with the expectation created by age.
